I remember a teacher telling me I have to think before I do. Research and give an idea some time, to evolve into something much bigger and better. But I’ve never really get this. Every time I tried to research or think about an idea, I stumble across a list of pro’s and contra’s/do’s and don’ts. And most of the time, because I over think an idea, I already chose not to execute, because off some contra’s. I believe every designer knows where I’m talking about.
Stop thinking, stop writing down why you should not do something or even think about it. Give your idea a chance. I can formally say, almost all. If not all my successful projects, are the ones I didn’t prepared. Projects I started from scratch, because I had this feeling something good will come out of it. The famous “This is it” feeling! But there are some things you have to know, before you decide to use this technique. From my experience, here is a list of things you should know;
Don’t be afraid to fail
Since you didn’t prepared this project, it is highly possible that you forgot some important things or come across problems you have never battled before. See this as a good thing. Next time you know this and you will be prepared. It’s not because you fail once, you are a failure. Let’s celebrate a failed project and turn your next, into a succes!
Lower your expectations, relax
I don’t want to say you shouldn’t have any expectations, it’s important to believe in your project and know you will do anything to make this work. But if you start with sky-high expectations, you might lose your actual idea, what you actually wanted to do with this project. And when an idea becomes one blur in your mind, I assure you it will fail.
Take a deep breath, remind yourself why you started this project and why it gave you “This is it” feeling again! Try and recall that feeling once in a while. The best thing to do this, is to write it down! When you are relaxed and focussed, there is a bigger chance you will find the correct solution for your problems and make this project happen. And when it does, I assure you it’s all worth it.
Enjoy the moment
You launched your project, people start to interact and your project starts to live. When this happens, prepare yourself, because you just entered a new stage! The stage where you decide to learn from your mistakes or enjoy the moment, because from this moment on. Your project is growing and anything is possible. It’s up to you how you want your project to grow.
Final
But at least give your ideas a chance, I hear a lot off people around me saying they have so many ideas, “BUT”… there is always a “but”. “I have no time”, “I don’t know how to do this”, “I don’t think I can do this”, etc. Try to kill your “but’s”. You live only once, you are who you are and if you want to give your ideas a chance, act and do what you want. If you don’t have time, make time. If you don’t know how to do something, learn it. Thinking you can’t do something, is not acceptable in my opinion. Just remind yourself what you want to achieve in live and work for it.
Do you over think your ideas? Or can you find yourself in this text. Let me know what you think in the comment section below!
